FALSE CREEK VANCOUVER WEST, BC

False Creek South is one of Vancouver’s pioneering waterfront communities. It is a highly liveable and walkable inner-city neighbourhood with a unique mix of land uses, housing types and tenures, transportation options, urban character, and amenities. The City of Vancouver, through its Property Endowment Fund, owns 80% of the land in False Creek South. The rest is owned by other levels of government, the Squamish First Nation, or private owners.

Southeast False Creek is better known as the Athlete's Village from the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Northeast False Creek has a long history as a vibrant, active space used for cultural gatherings and activities. Connected to neighbouring Chinatown, it was part of the Coast Salish Empire and the heart of Vancouver’s black community along Hogan’s Alley.
In 1915, the original Georgia Viaduct was built to bypass the tidal waters, rail lines, and industry lands below. The Georgia Viaduct was replaced and twinned with the Dunsmuir Viaduct in the early 1970s as the first piece of a proposed freeway system that was planned but never built.
Since the 1960s, the area has changed significantly, and the viaducts have become both physical and visual barriers.

FALSE CREEK:

The south shore of False Creek has had quite a diverse history of land uses since its founding. South False Creek went from being an industrial park, in the late 1800s and early 1900s, to being the populous residential area that it is today. The north shore of False Creek, on the downtown peninsula, has undergone multiple stages of development since its purchase by the province from the Canadian Pacific Railway in the early 1980s. Before the BC Cabinet bought the land of North False Creek to begin development for Expo ’86, the land was used for industrial purposes, however, provincial leaders developed a plan to build a sports stadium (BC Place), commercial outlets, and high-density residences on the newly cleared land.
