KITSILANO VANCOUVER WEST, BC

In the 1960s, beachside Kitsilano was Vancouver's hippy hangout, drawing comparisons to San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury. Today, Kitsilano still has plenty of culture, but its apartments and houses are now occupied by young urban professionals and families who enjoy a modern version of that relaxed atmosphere – this is the birthplace of global yoga brand, lululemon athletica. Just over the Burrard Bridge from the downtown peninsula, the neighbourhood brings together a collection of attractions, beach and parks, residential streets, and a couple of main commercial districts. “Kits,” as it’s known locally, is bordered by the waterfront to the north and West 16th Ave to the south; Burrard Street to the east and Alma Street to the west. Most of the commercial activity is along West 4th Avenue and West Broadway, but you’ll also find shops and restaurants in the areas close to the beach. (source: tourismvancouver.com)

KITSILANO:

Kitsilano is one of Vancouver's most popular neighbourhoods. The first people living in the area were the Squamish people and the neighbourhood's name is derived from a Squamish chief, August Jack Khatsahlano.

Kitsilano is a laid-back residential area known for the huge saltwater Kitsilano Pool and mountain views from Kitsilano Beach. Stores selling yoga wear, outdoor gear and fashionable clothes line West 4th Avenue, the main drag, and dining options range from waterside seafood spots to long-standing vegetarian eateries. Cultural attractions include the Vancouver Maritime Museum and the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre.

Kitsilano - commonly referred to as ‘Kits’ - is probably one of the trendiest and most popular neighborhoods in the city.

There are only a handful of schools in Kitsilano.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS IN KITSILANO

There is only one elementary school in Kits – Kitsilano Secondary. It also offers French Immersion.

HOUSING:

Concentrations of Craftsman-style houses can be found in the area bounded by Macdonald, Stephens, 5th and 6th Avenues. A virtually intact row of "California Bungalows" can be seen on the south side of 5th Avenue between Bayswater and Balaclava. In recognition of the special quality of these (duplex/conversion) areas, City Council has adopted changes to the Zoning and Development By-law to assist the retention of older character

RECREATION:

Kitsilano is home to 17 parks, which include six playgrounds, an off-leash dog park, and Kitsilano Beach, one of Vancouver's most popular beaches. Along with the beach itself, Kitsilano Beach Park also contains a franchise restaurant, Kitsilano Pool, and the Kitsilano Showboat.

Kitsilano is one of the city's organic-food hubs, and has extensive restaurants and retail along West 4th Avenue and West

TRANSPORTATION:

The neighbourhoods are easy to access by car, bike or bus, especially from downtown Vancouver. Parking is somewhat limited and traffic around the beach can back-up on weekend afternoons, so public transit (or walking/biking) will frequently be a better option. (source:
