CAMBIE VANCOUVER WEST, BC

The South Cambie area includes some of the province's top medical facilities, including BC Children's Hospital and BC Women's Hospital and Health Centre. It was also the site of historic Shaughnessy Hospital, used extensively during World Wars I and II.

Little Mountain is the former name of a quarry located at, what is now, Queen Elizabeth Park. The quarry gardens at the park are some of the most popular parks in Vancouver, and in the summer time are filled with tourists. There is a pitch and putt course and a disc golf course at Queen Elizabeth Park, as well as the Seasons In The Park restaurant.

CAMBIE:

Cambie is named for Henry John Cambie, chief surveyor of the Canadian Pacific Railway's western division. The first colonial settlers arrived in 1874 when William Mackie, a former gold miner, claimed 65 hectares of land surrounding a former elk pasture that is now Douglas Park, on West 22nd Avenue. The neighbourhood is bounded by Oak and Ontario streets, and West 16th and 41st avenues.

The oldest part of the community, the northern portion bounded by 17th, 23rd, Cambie and Oak, has a number of Craftsman-style heritage homes from the 1910s and 1920s. There are also several excellent examples of Moderne buildings in South Cambie including the Jean Matheson Pavilion and the former Shaughnessy Hospital's main building.
